People meditate for many reasons: stress management, psychological and emotional healing, and for spiritual development. There are many fine books that provide guidance at the beginning.
However, the inward journey is like nothing else you have ever done. It truly is a voyage into the unknown. It is common to have misunderstandings that turn into obstacles resulting in abandoning meditation. One can also practice in ways that are misguided and therefore not experience the maturation and reduction in suffering that is hoped for.
If you were heading out across a mountain pass, you would want a guide who has traversed that terrain in all kinds of weather, who knows what to take, how to stay alive and to find your way.

For more than half a century I have helped seekers on their journeys.
I have had the blessing of many fine teachers, and in particular Ruth Denison. Also I have worked with several fine psychotherapists and done years of training in various therapy modalities which allow me to meet people where they are and help them to dissolve old unhelpful conditioned patterns.
If you are just setting out to learn meditation, personal guidance can help you avoid many inevitable pitfalls and dead ends.
If you have been on your path for a while you may encounter obstacles that keep you stuck, perhaps for years. Or you may encounter suffering of such magnitude that you cannot bear to meditate and revert to self-medication or other forms of distraction. Some of life’s challenges require a compassionate heart to accompany you.
In our time we are faced with the profound threats of war, political instability, climate change, political and social upheaval, and the breakdown of the social order. All of these external instabilities can create fear and confusion that further stimulates anxiety, depression and a host of inner suffering. Understanding how to go deep in meditation is a kind of life-preserver for such times. If we are tending to our own inner lives, when the going gets tough, we can remain loving and kind to our loved ones and effective in our social action.
When your meditation begins to deepen and really bear fruit, the truths of Impermanence, Suffering and Selflessness profoundly reveal themselves. The ubiquitous fact and monumental proportions of human suffering can become overwhelming. At such times personal guidance can be essential.
Give yourself the gift of private consultation. This can take the form of one meeting, meetings over time to deepen your understanding, or to help you pass through a difficult time like a serious illness, the death of a loved one, children leaving home, difficulty in relationships and much more.
I consult only with those who are committed to meditation or who sincerely wish to begin meditating.
My suggested fee for individual meetings is $150 per hour. Of course, coming from my Buddhist training, if that fee is prohibitive and there is work to do we can find a suitable payment.
Yours in the Dharma
